Choosing the Right Autopilot:This complete
SmartPilot System package was designed for medium sized inboard powerboats
with hydraulic steering. The SmartPilot System works with hydraulic
steering systems having ram capacities between 4.9 and 10.5 cubic
inches (80cc - 172cc). The system comes with an
ST8002 Control Head, S1 Corepack with course computer, rudder reference
and fluxgate compass and a Type 1 12 Volt Hydraulic

The all-new ST8002 control head puts total helm control
at your fingertips with an easy-to-use rotary control for precision
course changes and convenient power steering control. The oversized
LCD display delivers large high contrast characters of pilot status,
compass heading and user defined data pages, transforming the ST8002

inch cylinder ramsThe SmartPilot S1 course computer is the intelligence
behind your autopilot system. It includes a powerful microprocessor,
programmed with all the steering know-how Raymarine gained with autopilots
on hundreds of thousands of boats over many years.
The course computer performs the main course keeping function and
also houses the electronic control circuitry for the drive unit
and power amplifier. NMEA inputs and outputs enable it
to operate easily with equipment from other manufacturers. A
SeaTalk interface provides connection to the control head and communication
with other Raymarine devices. Almost as important as the
course computer, the Smartpilot S1 wouldn't function without its Fluxgate
Compass. The fluxgate compass module houses a state-of-the-art electronic
compass mechanism, capable of tracking your boat's heading with incredible
accuracy. The gimballed mechanism handles pitch and roll movements
up to +/- 35 degrees. The fluxgate compass connects
directly to the course computer. It mounts on a
bulkhead below decks on most boats; if yours is a
steel-decked boat, the compass will be mounted above decks, out
of the reach of magnetic interference. The Rudder Reference
Transducer performs a vital role too: it tells the course
computer the precise position of your boat's rudder at all
times. the rotary model is most commonly required; the
linear model is used for hydraulic outboard steering systems.
The rotary model is mounted adjacent to the rudder stock,
while the outboard's linear model is mounted on the bullhorn
